Solar Panels can be installed on almost any type of pitched and flat roofs facing south, or somewhere between south east and south west.
For a flat roof installation, a specialised mounting system is secured to the roof using ballast. A solar installation can also be installed on garage or outhouse roofs providing they are structurally sound.
Types of roof
Tile: Tile roofing is common roof type that can be found in almost every city. Tiles themselves can be made of different materials so it is important to determine what material your tile is made from before proceeding, e.g. installing a solar panel on a clay/slate tile may be more expensive than installing on to a concrete tile.
Flat roof: For homes that have a flat roof it is very likely that they will be of felt/gravel roof type. A flat roof installation may require additional mounting that can be tilted to a desired angle and needs to be secured to the roof with ballast. This is simple to do but more expensive than installing on to a pitched roof. Nevertheless, it is still a viable roof type for installing solar panels.
Ground mount: For roofs that are not suitable for solar panels, if you have spare ground within your garden then a ground mounted solar panel system would be for you. The panels are mounted on A-frames and can be secured with ballast or foundation supports.
